Perth Outrigger Canoe Club are a Perth based club training on the beautiful Derbarl Yerrigan and integrated with the Maylands Sports and Recreation Club. The club was established in 2009. Perth Outrigger Canoe Club strives to provide opportunities for everyone in our community to participate in healthy, safe and inclusive outrigger canoe activities in a fun and family orientated environment. The club is managed by dedicated volunteer staff, all of whom tirelessly provide their skills, time and assistance to ensure the club can offer a variety of structured programs. Perth Outrigger Canoe Club provides a family atmosphere in the heart of Perth city with unique age group activities ranging from 8yrs to 60yrs plus. We aim to promote and grow the sport around the Perth City area.
We start as strangers and become whanau (family) through the amazing sport of outrigger canoeing (waka ama).
POCC is known in WA as one of the FRIENDLIEST Waka ama clubs!
Waka ama is the New Zealand term for the sport of outrigger canoeing.
Traditional Waka ama
Waka ama have been used in the Pacific Islands for centuries, but were rare in New Zealand by the time Europeans arrived. 18th-century British explorers saw some double-hulled canoes, but few outrigger canoes. There were many large trees in New Zealand, so Māori were able to build wide, stable canoes that did not need an outrigger.
Outriggers (ama) are used to stabilise canoes that are deeper than they are wide. The ama is lashed to two crossbeams, which are lashed to the hull. The ama is usually on the left side of the hull.
Australian Development
Outrigger canoe racing is a relatively young sport in Australia. Seventy years after Hawaii's first Outrigger Canoe Club was formed, the first club in Australia was formed in 1978 on the Gold Coast while the first club in Sydney was formed in 1989, the year the first Australian Championships were held.
The first regatta in Australia was held in 1981 and the national body, Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association (AOCRA), was formed in 1988.
